Abaca

Leaf-sheath fibre from a banana relative. Long, stiff and salt-tolerant, which is why it went into rope before it went into cloth.

Where it comes from
Abaca is stripped from the leaf sheath of Musa textilis. The outer layers of the sheath give coarse strong fibre and the inner layers give fine fibre, and the stripper decides which is which before the mill ever sees it.

Abaca fibre is long, and it keeps its strength in salt water, which is the property that put it into marine rope. Woven into cloth it is stiff and holds its own shape rather than draping.
Care
- Wipe rather than wash.
- Dry fully before storing; damp fibre holds smell.
Abaca is most often worked into bags, mats and paper rather than into laundered clothing.

Recycling route
No route running at scale
There is no sorted textile collection for abaca. Its longest-running second life is paper, which uses the fibre for strength.
In a blend
Abaca goods are often stitched onto synthetic linings and handles, which are bonded rather than spun together.
Skin notes
Mechanical
Coarse abaca has hard fibre ends and is felt as scratchy; fine inner-layer abaca is not, and the label does not distinguish them.
Chemical
Dyes and stiffening resins used on woven abaca goods are not declared.

What the label cannot tell you
The label says abaca. It does not say which layer of the sheath the fibre came from, and that is the difference between a piece that feels smooth and one that does not.
