Passport addresses

A code that has been printed is never moved.

One passport, one address, permanently. The subscription can change, the content can change, the passport can be republished or paused. The hangtag already in a customer's hands still arrives at the right place.

Why the address matters more than the page

A page can be fixed, updated, or switched back on. Ten thousand printed hangtags cannot be recalled. So the thing we treat as permanent is the address.

Print is permanent

The code on the hangtag and the care label stays with the product for its whole life. We never ask you to reprint because of something on our side.

The second owner reads it too

Care instructions and recycling routes are needed most in the years after the first purchase, often by someone who was not the original buyer.

The record-keeping duty sits with the brand

For the European market the brand is the party answerable for its passport records being available. A running subscription is how that duty is met, and Passport Archive is how it is met after one stops.

What a scan shows, in every state

Subscription active

Full passport

The passport renders in full: three chapters, figures recalculated when the data changes, maker attribution, and the badges you chose.

Grace window

Full passport

Fourteen days after the due date. Nothing changes for whoever scans it. The window covers payment verification on our side.

Grace window closed

Dormant

The passport goes dormant. A neutral page: the code is still valid, the tag is worth keeping, one route to the brand. No passport content, and no mention of payment.

Passport Archive held

Archived passport

Published passports resolve again at the same address, the last published version, read only. One dated line says it is the last published version and when it was published. Not a word about billing.

Passport updated

Tombstone

A brand decision, not a billing matter. The link carries a scan through to the passport that replaced it.

Maker permission withdrawn

Partial passport

The attribution block leaves the public passport within 24 hours. Composition, care, and recycling stay readable.

Certificate no longer current

Full passport

Validity dates are never public. The certificate leaves the page, and the evidence tier of the claim resting on it drops to whatever evidence remains. The figures themselves do not change.

Weak connection

Full passport

The core text renders first. The map and the photographs follow when the signal allows.

No state in this table ends in a 404. Every one of them has a page written for it.

If the subscription stops

The passport stops rendering. The address stays yours.

  • A 14 day grace window. We verify payments by hand, so the window covers our speed, not your lateness.

  • After that the passport goes dormant. The page a scan lands on is neutral and says nothing about payment. That is between us and you, not between us and your customers.

  • The QR code stays valid. The page tells whoever scanned it to keep the tag, because the tag will be useful again.

  • It returns at the same address. Once payment is settled the passport renders again from where it left off. No reactivation fee, and no reprint.

  • Scans during the dark period are still counted. When you are active again you see how many scans happened while the passport could not be shown.

  • Your data is not deleted. A dormant passport is suspended, not erased. If you want the passports you have already published to stay readable without subscribing again, the route is Passport Archive, and all of its mechanics are set out below.

The same rule is written into the brand agreement, stated up front rather than discovered when the passport has already gone dark.

What we refuse to do

  • Move a passport address, for any reason.
  • Mention your billing to the person scanning your product.
  • Delete your data because a subscription stopped.
  • Delete a passport, in any state. A passport that stops resolving goes dormant, and is never removed.
  • Charge by scan volume. A passport that succeeds must not cost its brand more.

If you want them to keep resolving

Passport Archive: what you have published keeps resolving, for ten years.

Passport Archive is a right you buy, one time or annually, and both buy the same right. It covers the passports you had already published when the subscription ended: resolving at their own addresses, the last published version, read only.

  • Ten years from purchase. Renewable for a further ten at the price current then.

  • It can be bought at any time. The door opens two months before the subscription ends and never closes afterwards, including after a passport has already gone dormant. Buying it brings resolution back.

  • The set is fixed. What enters the archive is what was already published when the subscription ended. Publishing anything new means subscribing again.

  • Read only, and that is the whole of it. No editing, no new products, no reports, no API, and no figures beyond a scan count.

  • Resubscribing supersedes the archive. Full rights return, and the unused archive term is held rather than lost. If the subscription stops again, the remainder resumes.

  • An unpaid renewal deletes nothing. The passports return to the dormant page and the address stays valid. No state ends in a 404.

  • Whoever scans it is told nothing about billing. What renders is the passport as published, with one dated line saying it is the last published version and when it was published. The limit that governs the dormant page governs this one too.

The mechanics above are settled and hold as written. The price is not published yet: while Mula opens by invitation this site carries no price list at all. The archive figure is given in writing, with the date it holds until.

The same rules are written into the brand agreement and repeated in the renewal notices, so you meet them long before any passport goes dark.

Before the print run

Before you print ten thousand hangtags

The passport address is decided before the print run, not after. It is your brand code plus a short slug, and the slug can still be edited up to the first publish. After that it is permanent, because the tag is already in the world.

The pre-print checklist puts the address, the QR block, and the scan test on one screen before anything is downloaded.

Mula is opening to a small number of brands first.

If you are weighing how long a code has to last, that is the right question to ask before you print.
