Map products and variants before importing

A catalogue describes what you sell. A passport needs a clear boundary around the item and the facts that apply to it.

Keep product and variant separate

In Shopify, a product can have variants formed from option combinations such as size and colour. List those combinations rather than treating a product title as a unique physical item. A small blue shirt and a large green shirt may share a listing while needing different supporting facts.

Mark shared and different facts

Create columns for material, composition, production location and evidence reference. Mark which values apply to every variant and which differ. If a colour uses another finish or a size changes the material mix, keep the distinction visible for review.

Keep references stable

Save the product and variant references alongside your own SKU where one exists. Note renamed or removed variants in the worksheet. Titles and photos help a reviewer recognise an item, but should not be the only way to match its evidence.

Review the proposed mapping

For the planned integration, check a draft mapping against the original catalogue before approving any passport. Do not assume every Shopify field transfers, that variants share one passport, or that catalogue edits automatically update published information. Those connection behaviours need confirmation during onboarding.

The essentials

  • List each option combination in scope.
  • Separate shared facts from variant-specific facts.
  • Review a mapping before publication.

Where we stand

Mula is independent of Shopify. The Shopify integration is in development. These guides describe preparation you can do now and the intended review process; they do not confirm installation or live synchronisation.
